Japan's northernmost major city has a distinctly un-Japanese spaciousness that sets it apart — wide boulevards, a grid layout, and a big-sky energy that is reflected in the bold, hearty food culture of Hokkaido.

Tokyo – 東京
Tokyo is the greatest food city in the world. More Michelin stars than Paris, the finest sushi and ramen on earth, and an unmatched diversity of regional Japanese cuisine concentrated in one vast, extraordinary metropolis.

Kyoto – 京都
Kyoto is the spiritual and culinary heart of Japan — an ancient imperial city where the exquisite kaiseki dining tradition was born and Zen Buddhist temple food reaches its purest expression to produces Japan's most elegant and historically layered cuisine.

Osaka – 大阪
Osaka has a personality entirely its own — louder, funnier, prouder of its food than anywhere else in Japan. This is kuidaore country, where the locals eat themselves into bankruptcy with takoyaki, okonomiyaki, kushikatsu, and endless rounds of izakaya food and cold Asahi in the neon-lit streets of Dotonbori.

Hiroshima – 広島
Hiroshima carries its history with a dignity that silences most visitors — and feeds them extraordinarily well. The city's layered okonomiyaki, the world's finest oysters from the Seto Inland Sea, and a vibrant food culture built on resilience and pride make it one of Japan's most moving and memorable food destinations.

Fukuoka – 福岡
Fukuoka is Japan's fastest-growing major city and arguably its most liveable — a compact, confident city on the northern tip of Kyushu where tonkotsu ramen was born, yatai street food stalls line the riverbanks each evening, and the food culture is among the most passionate and distinctive in Japan.

Frequently Asked Questions
- How long is the tour and when does it run?
-
The tour runs for 21 nights, from 6 to 27 October 2027.
- Which cities does the tour visit?
-
The itinerary takes in Sapporo and Jozankei in Hokkaido before heading south to Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima, and Fukuoka. City-to-city travel is by first-class Shinkansen (bullet train), with a domestic flight included from Sapporo to Tokyo. All airport transfers and transfers to your food experiences are included.
- What kind of accommodation is provided?
-
Every hotel is a 5-star property, including the Hilton Tokyo Odaiba, Hilton Kyoto, Hilton Osaka, Sheraton Grand Hiroshima, and Hotel Okura Fukuoka. In Jozankei you stay at Yuraku Souan Onsen, where rooms have their own private natural hot spring bath.
- What food experiences are included?
-
Highlights include a kaiseki dinner in Jozankei, Hokkaido seafood markets in Sapporo, the tuna auction at Toyosu Market and the Tsukiji Outer Market in Tokyo, Nishiki Market (“Kyoto’s Kitchen”), a matcha tea ceremony in Uji, Kobe beef teppanyaki in Osaka, okonomiyaki in Hiroshima, a sake brewery tour in Saijo, ramen at Fukuoka’s Ramen Stadium, yatai street-food stalls, and an optional fugu (pufferfish) experience. A private sushi dinner at Sushi Gyoten closes out the tour.
- Do I need to be able to speak Japanese?
-
Not at all. All food experiences are led by English-speaking guides, and most of the country has both Japanese and English signage. Learning a few phrases — arigatou (thank you), sumimasen (excuse me), and konnichiwa (hello) — is always appreciated.
- Do I need to arrange my own flights to Japan?
-
Yes — international flights to Japan are not included and should be arranged independently, though we’re happy to help you secure the best fares. The domestic flight between Sapporo and Tokyo is included.
- Is travel insurance included?
-
No. Travel insurance is not included and will need to be arranged separately. We strongly recommend organising cover before you travel.
- Are your tours available in languages other than English?
-
Most of our tours are run in English. Depending on the location and guide availability, some may also be offered in other languages such as Spanish or Chinese — please check the relevant tour page for details.
- How far in advance do I need to book?
-
We recommend booking as early as possible, especially in peak season. Our most popular tours can fill up quickly, so it’s best to secure your place well ahead of time.
- Do I need a visa to enter Japan?
-
Whether you need a visa depends on the passport you’re travelling on. Australian, US and UK passport holders can all enter Japan as tourists visa-free for up to 90 days, so this 21-night tour sits well within the limit. Just make sure your passport is valid for the duration of your stay.
- Is October a good time to visit Japan?
-
October is arguably the finest month to travel in Japan. Temperatures in most places are still pleasantly warm, but summer’s intense humidity and rainfall have eased, and autumn leaves begin to appear at higher elevations and in the north.
- What will the weather be like?
-
The tour begins in Hokkaido, which is noticeably cooler than the rest of Japan in October, with highs of around 16°C in Sapporo and lows near 7°C — and Jozankei Onsen, ringed by maple-covered hills, is one of the best places in the country to enjoy hot springs alongside the autumn leaves. The central cities of Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima, and Fukuoka average around 18–19°C, easing from the low-to-mid 20s early in the month to a comfortable 15–20°C later on. Autumn foliage is a real highlight of this timing: Hokkaido is caught at or near peak colour in early October, while the southern cities should just be starting to turn as you reach them.
- What should I pack?
-
Layering is key — long-sleeve shirts, light sweaters, and a medium-weight jacket will cover most destinations, with something warmer if you’re heading into the mountains. A compact umbrella or light rain jacket is also worth packing, particularly for Tokyo.
- How big is the tour group?
-
Groups are kept deliberately small, with a maximum of six guests per guide. This keeps the experience intimate and personal, and means easy access to the chefs, markets, and tastings along the way.
- Can you cater to dietary requirements or allergies?
-
In most cases, yes. As this is a food-focused tour, we ask that you let us know about any allergies or dietary requirements at the time of booking, so we can work with our partners to accommodate you wherever possible.
