Osaka – 大阪
Visit on the Taste of Japan Tour
October 19–21, 2026
Japan’s Kitchen
Culture & Local Life
Osaka has a personality entirely its own — louder, funnier, prouder of its food than anywhere else in Japan. The Osakan concept of kuidaore (eating until you drop) is more philosophy than hyperbole.
October is when locals reclaim the city from summer tourists, and the Dotonbori canal district comes alive with a more authentic energy. Osakas are famously direct and will tell you immediately if you’ve ordered wrong — take it as a compliment.

Culinary Specialties
一 Kobe Beef Teppanyaki 神戸牛 · The world’s most marbled beef
Wagyu cattle from Hyogo prefecture, raised on beer and massaged, with fat marbling scores (BMS 10–12) that render the beef almost liquid at room temperature. At a standing teppanyaki counter in Tenma, watching a chef cook A5 on iron at high heat is a masterclass in restraint — minimal seasoning, maximum respect.
二 Takoyaki たこ焼き · Octopus balls
Osaka’s most iconic street food — crispy-outside, molten-inside batter balls each containing a chunk of octopus, tempura scraps, ginger, and green onion. Topped with takoyaki sauce, Japanese mayo, bonito flakes and aonori. The flakes move in the steam. Eat immediately.
三 Kushikatsu 串カツ · Battered skewers
Shinsekai district’s contribution to world cuisine — anything imaginable (lotus root, shrimp, quail egg, pork belly, banana) dipped in thin panko batter and deep fried. The single rule: no double dipping in the communal sauce. Violations are taken seriously.
Off The Beaten Path
一 Kuromon Ichiba market at opening time
Dotonbori’s famous market gets crowded. Kuromon, known as Osaka’s kitchen, opens at 9am when restaurant chefs come to shop. The vendors are local, the produce superb, and several stalls will grill or fry your purchase on the spot.
二 Shinsekai and the Tsutenkaku Tower
Osaka’s intentionally retro entertainment district, built to mimic Paris and New York, now gloriously frozen in 1970s kitsch. The fugu lanterns, pachinko arcades, and kushikatsu counters here are entirely unpretentious and great value.
三 Nakazakicho neighbourhood coffee crawl
A pocket of Osaka entirely resistant to chain stores. Renovated nagaya (wooden row houses) from the 1920s now house micro-roasters, art galleries, and vintage bookshops. The coffee culture here is serious, unhurried, and excellent.
